Social Dance Etiquette

  • 1. Respect for All: Golden City Dance Collective strives to create a safe, comfortable, and welcoming space for all dancing humans! Be kind, considerate, and compassionate in your interactions with others. Actively try to make the people around you comfortable, and they'll do the same.

  • Consent & Comfort: Always ask whether your partner would like to lead or follow, and respect their skill level. Do not try to force your partner to dance an advanced move or technique they are not comfortable with. If someone declines to dance with you, respect their decision, and try asking someone else!

  • Inclusivity: This is a safe space for all. We embrace diversity of age, background, gender identity, sexual orientation, skin, skill, style-whatever you got or whoever you are, we love it! No bigotry or exclusionary behavior will be tolerated. If you feel uncomfortable dancing with someone because of who they are, we ask that you re-examine those feelings, or choose another dance home.

  • Personal Hygiene: This is a physical and close-contact art, with lots of sweating! Respect your fellow humans by showering, wearing clean clothes, and putting on deodorant. GCDC offers complementary mints and drinks at the snack table, and deodorant and mouthwash in our bathroom if you forget.

  • Unsolicited Teaching: No teaching your partner during group class or parties! Even if you're "just trying to help." If they want your help, they'll ask for it. Otherwise, meet your partner where they are, and just dance!

  • Lateness: We get it-we run late too. But students more than 15 minutes late for class will not be allowed to join, so as not to slow down the rest of the class.

  • Clean Soft Shoes: Our beautiful sprung dancefloor is meant for soft-soled dance shoes. If you don't have dance shoes yet, please avoid wearing heavy shoes or boots that are likely to scuff the floor. Either way, please wipe your feet on our front mats before using the floor. NOTE: Our ballroom floors are not meant to handle hard-sole tap or flamenco shoes. Sorry! You'll have to use shoes with rubber, leather, or suede soles for now.

  • Floorcraft: Floorcraft is the skill of avoiding collisions or stepped toes on the dancefloor-especially during traveling dances (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese, etc.). Line of Dance is a counterclockwise flow around the ballroom during parties. Beginner dancers, please try to stay to the middle of the room. Advanced dancers, please try to stay along the outside. Either way-look where you're dancing!
